Lough Fishing Buddies

Providing Fishing courses and Trips in Ireland

It has been a rather quite week for anglers on Lough Sheelin. There has however been the occasional good trout up to the 3lb+ bracket taken on small dry sedges. At this time of the year it is difficult to locate the trout as the move out into the deeper water in search of pin fry.

A fine 3lb Lough Sheelin trout - caught recently

In recent years the pin have gathered togeather to make large shoals in the centre areas of the lough. This has yet to happen on Sheelin. When this occurs the bigger trout jump and bash the fry. They then stay in these areas for a short while and feed on the small stunned fish. If you are in the right place at the right time using pin fry imitations for example a silver invicta or peter ross fished static in the area of the bashing trout, you will have a very good chance of hooking one. A variety of small sedges are still very much present on the Lough, so don’t rule out the dry fly just yet as sedges are still a very important part of the trouts diet. Some anglers have report seeing fish actively feeding on these at first light and again at dusk in mild conditions.
